COUNSELING The central feature of our counseling work together is to get clear about what you want. As a rule,
people decide to seek a counselor because of something that is unwanted-- insecurity, sadness from loss, anxiousness, possibly pain.
In order to get to a better place, you have to know what the better place is that you are seeking.
Sometimes I tell people that getting a counselor is like calling for a cab. The first thing a cab driver wants to know is where you want to go. If you say, "I don't know, just get me out of here" what do you think will happen? You will be driven around for a while--or longer, depending on how much fare the driver is trying to get from you--and then be deposited right back where you started.
Are your thoughts, feelings, and actions in alignment with what you want? You need to know where you want to go. You need to know what you want. After that, it is a lot easier to map out how to there--to align your habits of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with what you want rather than have your thoughts, feelings, and actions be determined by what you do't want, are afraid of, or are distressed by. CLINICAL HYPNOSIS Hypnosis has been defined as focused mental attention/absorption combined with
imagination and suggestion. When used in a therapeutic setting for the purposes of creating positive change or enhancing psychological, emotional, or physical health, it is referred to as clinical hypnosis.
Research has shown that all hypnosis is 'self-hypnosis.' Everyone who learns to utilize the benefits of hypnosis is using a process that is God given and entirely natural. This ability to selectively focus attention and add intended suggestion & imagery is an ability possessed by everyone, whether you know it or not. Whether you know how to beneficially use this ability or not. It is an ability that belongs to you, not to the expert or person offering guidance or assistance. No one can make you use this ability, and no one can stop you either. This creative power is your, not mine. When you are using your hypnotically focused mind, you are awake, aware, and in control.
My style of hypnosis encourages a sense of well-being, comfort, and confidence in self-utilization that doesn't require on-going dependency on me. My credentials include membership in and certification by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, advanced Diplomate status with the National Board of Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists, membership in the International Hypnosis Research Institute, and past-president of NC Society of Clinical Hypnosis. LIFE COACHING Coaching is about growth and accomplishment of goals rather than healing. Coaching in is not psychotherapy. It does not deal with the same issues, there is no mental health diagnosis, and is not covered by insurance (nor should it be.) Coaching is for people who have a vision of what they want to accomplish, yet need a jump start. A coach helps you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be with regard to a specific goal. For a fuller definition, you might want to check out Wikipedia. I coach people for clarity and for successful action.
CONSULTATION Sometimes a situation arises that you are just not sure about. You may think about it and think
about it, but you just aren't sure if you are seeing the situation clearly, not quite sure you trust your judgement.
In such instances, consulting with a neutral, expert professional can be very helpful. Just talking an issue through, thinking out loud so you can actually hear what is going on in your mind, is often all the enlightenment you may need. Journaling can help, but for some reason it is simply not quite as powerful as "hearing." And to talk out loud when you are alone just feels a little odd. So if you need a confidential, safe place to sort out a particular concern, but don't feel counseling is particularly necessary at this time, then a consultation session may be just what you need. Typically people schedule a 50-90 minute session, depending on the complexity of the issue being addressed.
